How long does it take to treat traumatic experiences with EMDR/PC?
This is a difficult question to answer as it depends on the severity and frequency of the trauma(s). In general, single traumatic experience can take as few as three sessions. Sever cases may take as many as 12 or more.
Research shows:
1) Studies have shown that 83-90% of those diagnosed with PTSD no longer met the criteria for the diagnosis after 4-7 sessions of EMDR (Lee et. al, 2002; Rothbaum, 1997).
2) .......significant decrease of a variety of PTSD-related symptoms after only 3-4 sessions (Ironson et. al, 2002; Scheck et. al, 1998; Wilson et. al, 1995).
3) ........ 77% of sufferers of multiple traumas no longer meet PTSD diagnostic criteria after 12 sessions (Carlson et. al, 1998).
4) People with histories of childhood abuse or neglect may require more than 12 sessions (Korn & Leeds, 2002; Mayfield & Hyder, 2002; Shapiro, 2001).
How long does it take to treat insomnia with CBT-I therapy?
This is less difficult to answer. CBT-I therapy has a set of information to teach and practice with clients. Relatively speaking, most clients who come in to ONLY treat insomnia takes 6-8 sessions. However, if a client's insomnia is blended with current life stress or with traumatic experiences, then treating stress symptoms and the trauma are essential as well. This will involve some trauma therapy or DBT therapy.
