There is not a therapy that suits all clients, therefore, Lei integrates therapies that will work best for each client's situation. She is an EMDR therapist (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) and PC (Progressive Counting) therapist. She was also trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Grief and Bereavement, Mental Health First Aid for Youth, etc. (Click on each therapy for detailed information and targeted mental health issues.) Lei Belinda Chen works with various school districts, RCMP, ICBC. FNHA, and other service providers on the island.
Her approach is to help find primary distress of the client, whis is normally berried under presenting symptoms/behaviors （such as drinking or eating disorder）, and then attend to it, unlearn it, or restructure it with clients together. Overall speaking, treatment plan involves clearing developmental trauma and learning new skills.
How long does it take to treat trauma with EMDR/PC?
This is a difficult question to answer as it depends on the number of traumas suffered and whether one has a history of child abuse or neglect. In general, we can say that it will take as few as three sessions, and sometimes as many as 12 or more. This information comes from research summarized below:
Studies have shown that 83-90% of those diagnosed with PTSD no longer met the criteria for the diagnosis after 4-7 sessions of EMDR (Lee et. al, 2002; Rothbaum, 1997).
Others have found significant decrease of a variety of PTSD-related symptoms after only 3-4 sessions (Ironson et. al, 2002; Scheck et. al, 1998; Wilson et. al, 1995).
One study has shown that 77% of sufferers of multiple traumas no longer meet PTSD diagnostic criteria after 12 sessions (Carlson et. al, 1998).
People with histories of childhood abuse or neglect may require more than 12 sessions (Korn & Leeds, 2002; Mayfield & Hyder, 2002; Shapiro, 2001).
How long does it take to treat insomnia with CBT-I therapy?
This is a less difficult question to answer. CBT-I therapy has a set of information to teach and practice with clients. Relatively speaking, most client who come in to ONLY treat insomnia takes 6-8 sessions. But, if client's insomnia is blended with current life stress or with earlier life traumatic experiences, then treating the stress and the trauma are essential as well. This will either involve some trauma therapy sessions or DBT/ skills building therapy sessions.
